About Polk
Suburban living combines with a rural setting in the Town of Polk. Located in Washington County, this 32.2 square mile town is home to almost 4,000 residents. Slinger borders Polk to the west, while Jackson neighbors the town to the east. Proximity to State Highway 60, Interstate 41, and Interstate 45 make nearby areas easily accessible, including downtown Milwaukee, only a 35-minute drive southeast.
The name of the town was derived from the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk, who was president when Wisconsin attained statehood. After the original boundaries for the town were decided in 1830, farming and trade became key industries for the town. Although farming was difficult because of the rocks and boulders in the area, the settlers were able to trade farm produce for a variety of animal meats from the Indians. Today, common industries in Polk include construction and machinery, healthcare, finance, and insurance. The average home value is $276,300. Many of the original buildings in the town, such as the first schoolhouse, first post office, and an 1846 dance hall and tavern still stand today.
Over 13,400 acres of forests, lakes, creeks, and trails are found in Polk. Residents can explore both Big Cedar Lake and Little Cedar Lake, perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing. Big Cedar Lake is the largest of the Washington County lakes at over 900 acres. The more than 10 miles of shoreline along the lake lead to plenty of hiking trails and scenic views. The Ice Age Trail, a 1,200-mile path, runs through the town.
