About Wales
Known for its rural charm and historic feel, Wales is a Waukesha County village that cherishes its past while building toward its future. Over 2,500 people live in the 3.29 square miles that make up the village. Waukesha borders Wales to the east, while Delafield is its neighbor to the north. With State Highways 18 and 83 crossing through the village, downtown Milwaukee is a quick 30-minute drive east.
The area was first settled in 1840 by Welsh immigrants who were drawn to the landscape, as it reminded them of their home country. Business boomed after the Chicago Northwestern railroad arrived 40 years later. Today, the 100+ businesses in the village are still growing, with many located in the historic downtown district. The Welsh influence is still present, thanks, in part, to the logo of the village replicating the Welsh national flag. Residential property in Wales ranges from multi-million dollar houses to acres of land ready for building. The median home value is $255,000.
Many recreational activities can be explored both in and around Wales. Since the village is in the Lake Country area of the state, dozens of lakes are located within just a few miles of Wales. The Glacial Drumlin Trail, a 52-mile multipurpose trail from Cottage Grove to Waukesha, runs through the village. Parks in Wales have sports fields and playgrounds to enjoy, while community events, such as the farmers market, are very common. The Legend at Brandybrook is one of the three golf courses that make up Wisconsin’s only 54-hole country club. The Brandybrook site in Wales includes a championship 18-hole course, two pools, multiple tennis courts, and a huge clubhouse.
