The name of the town was derived from the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk, who was president when Wisconsin attained statehood. After the original boundaries for the town were decided in 1830, farming and trade became key industries for the town. Although farming was difficult because of the rocks and boulders in the area, the settlers were able to trade farm produce for a variety of animal meats from the Indians.
