About Greendale
As a self proclaimed “quaint, historic garden community,” Greendale gives residents and visitors that cozy feeling of being in a small village. When your neighbors are friendly, cute stores line the streets in the more business-oriented parts of the village, and the pace is a nice, leisurely speed, it is hard not to feel comfortable. This is exactly what Greendale offers if you choose to live here. Greendale has come a long way from its planned-community roots. Yes, in the late 1930s, Greendale was constructed as a part of the New Deal housing project called the “Greenbelt Communities.” This meant that many homes, several businesses, and other buildings were built before anyone had moved in, and then only accepted applicants with certain household incomes and other factors. Now, Greendale is home to a diverse population with people from all economic stages.
If you’re a history buff, downtown Greendale has been labeled a historic site by the National Register of Historic Places. That old, comfortable, friendly feeling only old towns can supply is in full force in Greendale. That’s not to say there aren’t some modern amenities in Greendale as well, though. Wisconsin’s largest enclosed shopping center, Southridge mall, calls Greendale home. Southridge mall has over 100 stores for residents and visitors to enjoy and explore. Outside of the mall, Vintage 38 Wine & Craft Beer Lounge and Apples of Eden, a chocolate and candied apple shop, are local favorites.
