About Eagle

About the Community

Overview

Many cultural and recreational resources are found in this picturesque town of more than 3,600 people. Located in Waukesha County between Palmyra and Jericho, the Village of Eagle and the unincorporated area of Eagleville make up the Town of Eagle. This family-friendly community is known for its combination of old and new architecture, as well as the outdoor activities in and around the town. State highways 59 and 67 cross through Eagle, allowing for easy travel to Madison and Milwaukee.

The town received its name in the 1830s, when three travelers came across the prairie and saw a huge bald-headed eagle soaring in the sky above. In 1851, the southern part of the Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad came to town, leading to a boom in industry. Eagle was almost renamed “Diamond City” when one of the largest glacial diamonds in the United States was discovered. The diamond was later stolen and never recovered from the New York American Museum of Natural History.

The economy transitioned from one based on railroads and agriculture to one based on tourism and recreation, thanks to many natural springs, lakes, and forests in the area. Resorts, such as Eagle Springs Golf Resort and Paradise Springs, were built because of the natural springs.

Recreation

The Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit is located only a few miles west of the town and boasts many recreational opportunities, including camping, hunting, fishing, kayaking, biking, swimming, and horseback riding. In addition, hikers can traverse the 108-mile Ice Age Trail, which runs through the state forest. Old World Wisconsin, the largest outdoor museum portraying rural life in the United States, has more than 60 historic structures that depict the daily life of Wisconsin immigrants in the 19th century
