About Cedarburg
The first settler in area bought land on the banks of Cedar Creek from the government in 1842. William Ludwig Groth built his cabin here and named it “Cedarburg,” meaning “castle of cedars.” Two years later, the city was officially named Cedarburg. Originally, the Cedarburg Grist Mill, the Cedarburg Woolen Mill, and the Cedarburg Electric Light Commission made up the economy of the community. Many of these original buildings are still standing and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the most common industries for Cedarburg residents include manufacturing and management.
The Ozaukee Interurban Trail crosses through the city and is great for bike rides and long walks. One of the most popular places in the summer is the outdoor Cedarburg Community Pool, perfect for water fitness and swimming. Cedar Creek runs through the city, providing canoeing, kayaking, and fishing opportunities. Cedarburg is known for its unique community events, especially the festivals that take place year round. Oktoberfest, Winter Festival, Wine and Harvest Festival, and Strawberry Festival are all very popular events in the city.
