A mid-century modern home in Shorewood designed by the architect of Milwaukee's iconic Mitchell Park Domes hit the market Friday for $1.25 million.

Architect Donald Grieb designed the house, which was built in 1954. The following year, he entered a design competition for Milwaukee's horticultural conservatory and won with his plans for three glass domes that would house what he described as "a zoo for plants."

Construction of the Domes was completed in 1967. As they now face more than $60 million in needed repairs, there's been recent debate over whether to restore, rebuild or demolish them.

The Shorewood home Grieb designed spans 4,555 square feet with four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one half-bath. It maintains mid-century features and also has updates including an addition, along with renovations in the kitchen and bathrooms.

"It's a very good example of mid-century modern architecture," said Suzanne Powers of Powers Realty Group, which has the listing. The current owners have "updated it very tastefully for today’s modern conveniences," she said.

Powers Realty Group is also marketing a mid-century modern home in Fox Point designed by Frank Lloyd Wright engineer Mendel Glickman. That house was built in 1952 and hasn't been renovated, although the property also contains a detached art studio structure built in 2016.

"That is a true 1950s time capsule," Powers said. "They haven't touched a thing."

Additionally, a famous Milwaukee home designed by Wright himself, known as the Bogk house, is on the market for $1.5 million.
